Traffic
Vehicles sure do make getting around easier, but traffic can be a nightmare to deal with. Some of us complain about living in a town with two stoplights and one lane highways, but count your blessings when it comes to traffic concerns. You never have to worry about traffic jams and excessive accidents with hundreds of cars piled up. Sure those big cities have up to eight lanes of traffic but it is often congested and full of erratically drivers weaving in and out of traffic. Then there is the issue of seeing your exist ahead and you can't get across the other lanes to take it!
Most areas work hard to ensure traffic safety and flow, but it isn't always easy or possible. The amount of time a particular stoplight remains green or red has to do with the traffic flow in that particular area. Speed limits are posted with safety precautions in that area to be taken into consideration. Those who exceed the speed limit are placing themselves and others at risk. Most traffic related accidents and deaths are the result of someone exceeding the speed limit.
This doesn't necessarily mean exceeding the speed limit, it can also include exceeding the speed limit of the road conditions. Rain, snow, high winds, and fog are all weather related issues that often require individuals to reduce the amount of speed to accommodate the road conditions. Some people feel comfortable driving faster than others in bad weather. Use your own judgment and don't be hurried along by other drivers.
To protect yourself on the road, keep your vehicle in good operating condition. Check your tires and oil. Make sure you have plenty of gas and that you keep your windshield clean. Your mirrors should be properly adjusted so that you can see all the necessary angles. If you do need to pull over for an emergency, try to get as far off the road as possible, out of the way of oncoming traffic. Try to use a road if possible or get off on an exit. If your vehicle remains in the road, then get out of it immediately.
Drive defensively and assertively. Stay out of the way of other drivers who are driving erratically or appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Report any such driving incidents to the local authorities to help prevent accidents. You just might be helping traffic to flow smoothly and preventing someone from getting hurt or killed.
